| 6 | ![]() ![]() | SHORT DESCRIPTION: Watercolor by Edward James showing British and American ships and blockade runners in the harbor at St. George's, Bermuda on September 27th, 1862. The steamships Minho (flying what looks like a Swedish flag) and Ouachita (flying an unidentified house flag) are anchored to the left of center. There is an American naval ship, USS Tioga, is anchored against a wharf, possibly Penno’s Wharf, at the left. The US Consulate with its American flag flying sits behind it. The American warship at the center firing a salute is the USS Wachusett. Anchored near the bow of the US Navy ship at the center is the Bermuda government's steam screw yacht Siren. The two large vessels to the right of Siren the blockade runners Gladiator (in the front) and Harriet Pinckney (behind). At the extreme right in the background sits the Merrimac (flying a Confederate first national flag on her foremast). In the foreground are a number of small boats. At the left are two Bermuda sloops, at the right is a row boat carrying a British army officer (standing) and another small boat loaded with barrels. In the background stretching from the left to the center sit the wharfs, American consulate, and Ordnance Island with several small sailing ships tied to the wharf. NOTES: During the period James painted this scene the blockade runners Minho and Ouachita were anchored near each other in St George’s, Bermuda. While there, three US Navy warships visited St George’s harbor and hovered offshore in an effort to stop or intimidate blockade running. USS Wachusett, USS Sonoma, and USS Tioga were deterred from this effort by British Royal Navy warships. After two fruitless weeks the three US Navy ships withdrew (mainly due to the fact that the Bermuda government would not supply the coal they requested and their supplies were running low), but not before chasing Minho back into port after she attempted to leave port. VESSEL HISTORY: Minho was built by Blackwood and Gordon of Paisley, Scotland, in 1854. The ship was composite built of wood on iron frames and measured 175.3 x 22 x 13.5, 400 gross tons, and 253 tons Register. Minho was built to carry passengers and cargo for the Bibby Line of Liverpool. Bibby was a major ship owner who had expanded into steamships in 1850 and served ports around Europe. Confederate government backed shippers Fraser, Trenholm and Company purchased Minho from Bibby and ran the blockade from April through to September 1862. Minho was subsequently sold to another Confederate owner, the Navigation Company and ran aground trying to enter Charleston October 2, 1862. The wreck is still there. Ouachita was built in England in 1858 and purchased by ship owner Thomas Begbie in 1862. Begbie acquired a considerable fleet of blockade runners. Built of iron, Ouachita was among the smallest of Begbie’s ships, measuring 116 x 16 x 6.5 feet, and 386 tons burden. USS Memphis captured Ouachita on her first try to reach the Confederacy from Bermuda, October 14, 1862. Sold by the prize court, the new owners renamed it Sonora. Siren was a steam screw propeller yacht with a three mast schooner rig. She was 110 x 17 x 7 feet. Siren was owned by the government of Bermuda and was sold in 1864 Siren was sold to adventurers who removed the mizzenmast and changed the name to Lady of Lyon. The new owners intended to run the blockade, leaving port April 6. The next day they returned to St George’s disabled. After several weeks of repairs and under a new captain, a Bermudian named Peniston, Lady of Lyon tried to leave for Wilmington. This time they were held back because their departure clearance papers had gone missing “supposed to have been stolen.” Finally the small steamer left Bermuda for the Confederacy May 30. By June 20 recently arrived blockade runners reported that Lady of Lyon had never arrived in Wilmington. The ship was thought to have foundered at sea. In actuality Captain Peniston’s command had been captured 80 miles away from Cape Fear by USS Keystone State. Harriet Pinckney was a screw steamer built at Middleboro July 23, 1862, of the port of London: Length, 191.3 feet; breadth, 28.9; depth, 17.6; gross tonnage, 714; direct engines, 143.40=571.40. Engines, 90-horse power; one deck, two masts, brig rig, elliptic stern, Clench build, no gallery, no head; iron frame. Date of register, July 24, 1862. Gladiator is an iron screw of about 700 tons, English measurement. In this image she is deeply loaded and has on board 20,240 guns and Enfield rifles, a large quantity of powder, cartridges, caps, shells, cartridge paper, blankets, army cloths, etc. She draws near 10 feet of water forward and 14 feet aft, is 1 year old. Her striking features are that she is long, sets low or down in the water aft, has a round stern, an upright stem without billet or figurehead, three masts, main and mizzen (without yards) foremast with three yards rigged like a topsail schooner, black hull, funnel between fore and main mast, white side boats. | CL6511 | |||||||
